Our take
Undertale drops you into the Underground as a child who fell through a hole in the world, then quietly rewires what you expect from a role-playing game. Combat is real-time bullet-hell dodging wrapped around a turn-based frame, but the headline trick is that almost nothing has to die. You can talk a monster down, spare it, befriend it, and the game remembers every decision you make.
What lingers is how personal it feels for something built mostly by one person. The humor is weird and specific, the music lands harder than its chiptune bones suggest, and the three-route structure means your first ending is really just the tutorial for the story you chose. It is short, strange, and stubbornly its own thing. Critics landed almost unanimously on it (IGN 10/10, Game Informer 9.5/10, Metacritic 92), and the affection has aged well.
